FATHEAD MINNOWS

Mature adult fathead minnows in spawning colours
male (top) female (bottom)
Our healthy fathead minnows have
been isolated for years from the wild fishery. No other
minnow types are raised in the same water so the risk of
disease (or unwanted specie) transfer is quite minimal.
The Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources
(MNR) prefers the use of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) over
other native fish species to control mosquito larvae in fighting the
West Nile virus.
Hedley's
Trout Farm located in SW Ontario and is licenced by the OMNR to
propagate and sell
these minnows.
Because these minnows quickly multiply
and seldom exceed three inches in
length, they are excellent food for trout, bass, walleye and perch in
private
self contained ponds that do not have a sufficient food supply.
